Locals Head To Tampa For Red Bull's Flugtag

This boot was made for flying
Posted by Casandra Andrews July 15, 2008 7:38 AM
Team plans to launch homemade contraption into the air in Tampa on Saturday
Catherine Cotton / Press-RegisterRhys Sharp, a recent graduate of the University of West Florida, smoothes bright purple paint on the 10-foot tall footwear he helped build over several weekends this summer in Mobile.
It started out as a joke, scrawled on a napkin late one night at a bar in Florida.
That's where five college students, including Matt LeMond from Mobile, met and came up with an idea to build a human flying machine based on the song with the lyrics "Boot Wit Da Fur" for a contest sponsored by Red Bull, the energy drink.

Never mind that none of them had aeronautical experience. Never mind that the contraption they crafted would likely crash into a big body of water.
This was about more than winning. It was about being cheered on by thousands of like-minded people, being famous for a few minutes, doing something slightly crazy and more than a little dangerous.
So their idea for a flying boot was sketched and sent in, LeMond said. Eventually, the students were contacted and told that out of 300 or so entries, "Team Boots Wit Da Fur" was one of 40 selected to take part in the Red Bull Flugtag Tampa Bay on Saturday.
If you haven't seen the commercials on TV and the Internet, here's how it works:
Each team will stand on a deck 30 feet above the water at the Tampa Convention Center and attempt to take flight in their homemade contraptions. A panel of judges will grade the teams on three criteria: distance flown, creativity of the craft, and the team's showmanship on stage.
Top prize is a pilot's training course, second-place winners receive skydiving lessons and the third-place team will learn to paraglide.
Nearly everyone involved gets a free dip in the bay.
Team Boot Wit Da Fur consists of Lindsay Knepper, the pilot of the boot, who attends the University of Alabama; Keegan Lewis, a junior at Florida A&M; LeMond, who recently earned a degree from Spring Hill College; Rhys Sharp, who graduated from the University of West Florida and Taz Sobotka, who attends Florida State.
Matt LeMond, a Spring Hill College graduate, paints the boot. LeMond and his team hope the boot, which is outfitted with canvas wings, will sail farther than any of the other human flying machines taking part in the Red Bull Flugtag Tampa Bay.
Most members of the group spent several weekends in a Mobile backyard building the giant papier-mache object. Then they moved it to a parking lot in Theodore and painted it a few shades shy of Barney-the-Dinosaur purple to take part in the Flugtag, which is German for "flying day."
After a seven-hour day spent shaping glue-covered strips of green paper over chicken wire, LeMond and Sharp braved the stench of a nearby sanitation station and the threat of looming thunderstorms to smooth paint over the hulking galoot of a boot.
The faux footwear could easily be seen from a few hundred feet away. As cars zoomed past on Rangeline Road last week, the guys were still trying to decide what color fur to use when the paint dried. Maybe black and white, one of them suggested. Or maybe pink?
LeMond said he ended up buying several furry rugs at Wal-Mart, ripping them apart and stretching them across the top of the boot: "It was interesting." Finally, the wings were created from wood frames covered with canvas.
Building a human flying machine, even one that probably won't sail with the greatest of ease, wasn't as easy as they thought it would be. LeMond figures the team spent just under $1,000 on supplies and tools, not counting the amount paid for gas as team members traveled back and forth from various spots in Florida and Hobby Lobby craft stores.
The first Red Bull Flugtag took off in Vienna, Austria, in 1991 and several dozen have been held in more than 30 countries around the world attracting crowds of up to 300,000. An Austrian team holds the record for the longest flight with 195 feet.
For more information on the event Saturday in Tampa, including team bios, photos and video footage from past Red Bull Flugtags, visit www.redbullflugtagusa.com.
"We're pretty sure it's going to fall," LeMond said. "We just hope it falls with a little bit of style."

Tom Thumb Manager's Meeting & Trade Show

Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the Emerald Coast Conference Center
This was the 1st time that Tom Thumb included a Trade Show within their Manager's Meeting. This included 19 vendors that signed up for booths to promote either new products or programs for the Spring and Summer seasons. Goldring Gulf had a booth that was represented by the following products: Blue Moon, Keystone, Corona, Smirnoff Ice and Parrot Bay. The Goldring Gulf team also took advantage of the non-alcoholic cold sampling opportunity by placing three of products in the manager's hands; Xing Tea, Talking Rain and Red bull. Among the 18 other booths was a Miller Brewing Company Booth that had samples of the new neons and point of sale for the upcoming season.
This event was well recieved by both sides. Tom Thumb Managers had a chance to visit each of the booths and sign up for placements of new products or displays that would enhance the store's sales. Several committments were made; we will be happy to execute the programs as soon as possible. Thank you to Terry Reed and his team for representing Goldring Gulf and the products we stand behind!
